Vertigo

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving, even when you are still. It is often caused by disturbances in the inner ear balance system, which helps your body understand position and movement. Vertigo can feel sudden and intense and may be accompanied by dizziness, nausea, imbalance, or difficulty focusing your vision.

Common causes of vertigo include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), inner ear inflammation, or balance system disruptions following illness, injury, or prolonged inactivity.

How Vertigo Is Treated

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Physiotherapists trained in vestibular therapy can assess the balance system and determine which structures are contributing to the symptoms.

Treatment may include:

  • Positional repositioning maneuvers (such as the Epley maneuver) to move displaced crystals in the inner ear
  • Vestibular rehabilitation exercises to retrain the brain and balance system
  • Eye and head movement exercises to improve stability and coordination
  • Balance training to restore confidence with movement

Many forms of vertigo improve quickly with the correct treatment.

What You Can Do

If you are experiencing vertigo, the following strategies may help:

  • Move slowly when changing positions (lying down, sitting, standing)
  • Avoid sudden head movements during active symptoms
  • Stay hydrated and rest if dizziness is severe
  • Keep your environment safe to prevent falls

When to See a Physiotherapist

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if dizziness or vertigo persists for more than a few days, occurs repeatedly, or interferes with your daily activities, balance, or ability to move confidently. Prompt assessment can often identify the cause and provide targeted treatment to relieve symptoms quickly.

How kinect therapy is different

At Kinect Therapy, we assess your balance system, neck, and movement patterns to identify the source of vertigo and guide you through safe, effective exercises to help restore stability and confidence in movement.
