Tinnitus

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head when no external sound is present. People commonly describe it as ringing, buzzing, humming, or hissing. Tinnitus can occur in one or both ears and may be constant or intermittent. While it is often related to the inner ear, it can also be influenced by jaw tension, neck stiffness, posture, stress, or muscle tightness around the head and neck.

How Tinnitus Is Treated

Treatment focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying factors contributing to symptoms. Physiotherapy can help when tinnitus is linked to muscle tension, TMJ dysfunction, neck stiffness, or posture issues.

Treatment may include:

  • Hands-on therapy for the neck, jaw, and surrounding muscles
  • Exercises to improve neck mobility and posture
  • Techniques to reduce muscle tension and stress
  • Education on jaw positioning and movement habits

Physiotherapy is often used alongside care from other healthcare providers when needed.

What You Can Do

Some simple strategies may help reduce symptoms:

  • Maintain good posture, especially during computer or phone use
  • Reduce jaw clenching or teeth grinding
  • Manage stress through relaxation or breathing techniques
  • Limit prolonged exposure to loud noise
  • Keep neck and shoulder muscles relaxed with gentle movement

When to See a Physiotherapist

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if tinnitus is accompanied by neck pain, jaw discomfort, headaches, or muscle tension, or if symptoms worsen with certain neck or jaw movements. Addressing these contributing factors can sometimes reduce the intensity or frequency of tinnitus.

How kinect therapy is different

At Kinect Therapy, we assess the relationship between the neck, jaw, posture, and muscle tension to help identify contributing factors and provide hands-on treatment and exercises aimed at improving overall head and neck function.
