Numbness

What is Numbness?

Numbness is a loss or reduction of sensation in a part of the body. It may feel like tingling, pins and needles, burning, or decreased feeling in areas such as the hands, arms, legs, or feet. Numbness often occurs when a nerve becomes irritated, compressed, or restricted, preventing normal signals from traveling between the brain and the affected area.

Common causes can include:

  • Nerve compression (such as in the neck, back, wrist, or hip)
  • Muscle tension or tight tissues pressing on nerves
  • Poor posture or prolonged positioning
  • Repetitive movements or overuse
  • Joint stiffness or movement restrictions

How numbness Is Treated

Treatment focuses on identifying and reducing the source of nerve irritation.

Physiotherapy may include:

  • Hands-on therapy to release tight muscles and improve joint mobility
  • Nerve mobility exercises to restore normal nerve movement
  • Strengthening exercises to support proper body mechanics
  • Posture and movement education to reduce strain on nerves

Addressing the underlying cause often helps restore normal sensation and function.

What You Can Do

Some simple strategies may help reduce numbness:

  • Change positions regularly and avoid prolonged pressure on one area
  • Maintain good posture during work, driving, and phone use
  • Perform gentle stretching and mobility exercises
  • Avoid repetitive movements that irritate symptoms
  • Stay active to promote circulation and nerve health

When to See a Physiotherapist

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if numbness persists, spreads, or is accompanied by weakness, pain, or loss of coordination. Early assessment can help identify the source of nerve irritation and prevent symptoms from worsening.

How kinect therapy is different

At Kinect Therapy, we assess how joints, muscles, and nerves work together to determine the cause of numbness and provide hands-on treatment and targeted exercises to help restore normal sensation and movement.
