Poor Posture - "Computer Neck"

What is Computer neck?

Computer neck, often referred to as tech neck or forward head posture, occurs when the head and shoulders drift forward for prolonged periods while using computers, phones, or tablets. Over time, this position places extra strain on the neck, upper back, and shoulder muscles, which can lead to pain, stiffness, headaches, and fatigue.

Common symptoms include:

  • Neck and upper back stiffness
  • Headaches, especially at the base of the skull
  • Shoulder tightness or discomfort
  • Fatigue in the neck and upper back muscle
  • Reduced neck mobility

How it Is Treated

Treatment focuses on improving posture, reducing muscle tension, and strengthening the muscles that support proper head and neck alignment.

Physiotherapy may include:

  • Hands-on treatment to release tight neck and shoulder muscles
  • Exercises to strengthen the upper back and neck stabilizing muscles
  • Mobility work for the neck, shoulders, and upper spine
  • Posture education and ergonomic advice for workstations and daily activities

What You Can Do

You can help reduce strain on your neck with a few simple changes:

  • Adjust screens so they are at eye level
  • Sit with shoulders relaxed and back supported
  • Take regular breaks from screens to move and stretch
  • Perform gentle neck and upper back mobility exercises
  • Avoid prolonged phone use with the head tilted forward

When to See a Physiotherapist

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if neck or upper back pain persists for more than a few weeks, causes headaches, or interferes with work, sleep, or daily activities. Early treatment can help restore proper movement and prevent long-term strain.

How kinect therapy is different

At Kinect Therapy, we take a hands-on approach to assessing posture, neck movement, and muscle balance to help correct the underlying causes of computer neck and support comfortable, efficient movement throughout the day.
