Carpal Tunnel

What is CarpAl Tunnel?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This narrow passageway contains tendons and the nerve that control sensation and movement in parts of the hand. When the space becomes irritated or swollen, it can place pressure on the nerve.

Common symptoms include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Hand weakness or difficulty gripping objects
  • Pain in the wrist or hand that may travel up the forearm
  • Symptoms that worsen with repetitive hand use or at night

How Carpal Tunnel Is Treated

Treatment focuses on reducing pressure on the nerve and improving the movement of the wrist, hand, and surrounding tissues.
Physiotherapy may include:

  • Hands-on treatment to reduce tension in the wrist, forearm, and hand
  • Nerve mobility and tendon gliding exercises
  • Wrist and forearm strengthening exercises
  • Education on ergonomic positioning and activity modification
  • Bracing or support recommendations when appropriate

Early treatment can help reduce irritation and prevent symptoms from worsening.

What You Can Do

Several strategies can help reduce strain on the wrist and hand:

  • Take frequent breaks from repetitive hand activities
  • Keep wrists in a neutral position during typing or gripping tasks
  • Perform gentle hand and wrist mobility exercises
  • Avoid prolonged gripping or excessive wrist bending
  • Adjust workstation ergonomics to reduce wrist strain

When to See a Physiotherapist

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if you experience persistent numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand, especially if symptoms interfere with sleep or daily tasks. Early assessment can help identify contributing factors and guide treatment to relieve pressure on the nerve.

How kinect therapy is different

At Kinect Therapy, we assess the wrist, forearm, and upper limb mechanics to identify the source of nerve irritation and provide hands-on treatment and targeted exercises to restore comfortable hand and wrist function.
